The days are full and good and sometimes I forget I need to post…Sorry
Today was a full day. This morning after breakfast and another good small group time debriefing the trip and talking about life we divided into three work groups.
Vicky and Joe’s house: We finished our project of clearing the land, moving dirt so they can begin pouring footers on the first of next month. They have worked hard and have saved money to do the best they can. Their family of two is currently staying in a room at her sister’s house. It is very tight, especially because their son is paralyzed from the waist down. Their son was in a horrible accident about a year ago.
La Hermosa Orphanage: Today the group finished leveling the ground and poured the cement slab that will help the orphanage as a play area for the children. Others helped move heavy “houses” that will house pump hoses in case of another wildfire. In 2019 a wildfire ripped through the area, almost burning the orphanage to the ground. They have since built 10 pilas to hold water and have pump houses to fight the fire if/when it happens again.
La Mision Elementary School: The school has not had school for over a year. If schools are not open for in-person, education is extremely difficult as most do not have access to computers or even phones that could do any sort of zoom classes. They are hoping to open schools next month, so the team cleared land and did some painting. Nobody has been at the school so every little thing we can do to help it look welcoming is a huge help.
Tomorrow we will continue some work here at the orphanage, work at the school, and begin cutting wood for bunk beds for the refugee shelter.
A lot of games of BS, Spoons, and Egyptian Rat Slap have been played as well as some great conversations about life. Oh and the food has been amazing!
