This morning was cold and foggy, but by breakfast, most of the fog had burned off to reveal a beautiful sunrise.
After some great pancakes, sausage, and some cereal we had a guided quiet time where students spread out by themselves to journal, pray and reflect on what had been going on the last 24 hours and to prepare for the day.
We then divided into a few different work crews. One work crew was busy painting the walls of a new basketball court that was recently built. Primed and then painted it purple. Mexico loves its colors and it is important for a place like an orphanage to have bright colors. Another crew spent time painting a new tiny house for future long-term volunteers and then another crew dug a trench and moved water pipes so the orphanage can continue to have water.
The orphanage sits on top of a mountain so water must be trucked in and pumped into holding tanks above the orphanage. From there it is gravity-fed to our camp and into the orphanage. Therefore, we are all asked to take 5-minute showers so as to not use much water for the orphanage. Tonight was their first showers and they all did a great job of being quick with the showers.
Today was a national holiday in Mexico (Benito Juarez’s birthday) so the kids were home from school. So we were able to spend a lot of time playing with the kids. Soccer, tag, duck/duck goose, coloring, sidewalk chalk, basketball, American Football. It was a great day spent working and playing with the children. Our team and the children are sad that the children have to go to school tomorrow as they really enjoyed playing with each other.
Then tonight we had amazing burritos for dinner followed by a great team time. Tonight we discussed what we worry about in life and how we can trust God with those worries. We looked at two practical ways we can work through our worries when they become overwhelming.
Tomorrow we will have more work projects at the orphanage and maybe a quick run into town to get some snacks and maybe some tacos. Plus we will be sure to be ready when the children are ready to play.
Everyone has been working hard and playing hard. We are all tired!
