This morning we woke up to a nice cool foggy breeze. But it didn’t take long for the fog to burn off and get hot.
After breakfast and our solitude time we divided into four workgroups:
La Mision – We are in the process of preparing a concrete (20×24) foundation for a family. About two years ago we had a wildfire burn through our community and many houses were lost. Though some have rebuilt, this family has not been able to do so. They have been doing everything they can to save and literally purchase supplies, brick by brick, rebar by rebar, concrete bag by concrete bag. In the meantime the family of four (two small children) have been staying with different families, sometimes sleeping on the floor. This foundation will give them a great boost to start building as they have purchased enough blocks to build the walls.
Casa de Luz – I will explain more about this amazing organization tomorrow. Essentially it is a daycare for working single moms. We spent time today spreading gravel, demoing a sidewalk, and stuccoing a wall. It is our hope to finish stuccoing the wall so we can paint by Friday and have a new sidewalk poured by Thursday.
Carlos – Carlos is a young man who is going to college (most people in the community stop going to school at 6th grade). Carlos has experienced a hard life and is now working with other teenagers in the community to encourage them towards a better life. He has a lot of land that he hopes to build a house and get married later this year. But the lot is a large whole or downgrade and it isn’t level to build. So the students have been filling tires with sand to level the land.
Hermosa Orphanage – Lastly some students painted part of the kitchen (to be finished later this week), worked on small huts that will house water pumps (the same wildfire that burnt the La Mision house down, almost burnt down the orphanage), to help fight future fires, if there are any.
Afte work students had time with the children at the orphanage playing soccer, squirt guns, tag, and having fun together.
Tomorrow we will be at the same worksites.
Photos will be updated through the evening as I get them…
