This morning we woke up to some cool fog and began our day with a good breakfast (pancakes, sausage, cereal, and some fruit). After a quick clean-up of the kitchen and bathrooms, we broke into small groups to get to know each other a little better through some good discussion.
Then we divided into two worksites.
Vicky and Joe’s house; Out team of eleven drove to a plot of land of a family who is in process of building a house. They are at the very beginning. They have had footers dug of what they hope will be a two-story house someday. But the place for the footers was not level and now there were many overgrown weeds. We spent time today pulling weeds, cleaning the land, and then began leveling the ground for footers. We hope to have the ground level so they can begin pouring footers later this year.
La Hermosa Orphanage: The rest of the team stayed here at the orphanage to work on spreading rock to raise the level of the land. Another team worked on leveling land to hopefully pour a concrete slab on Wednesday. Others were working on other maintenance needs here at the orphanage.
Then after we finished up for the day the students had time to play with the children. Tag, soccer, throwing the football, was played and there was a lot of laughter and fun.
Tonight we will have our team time and a campfire before bed.
Tomorrow we will have a team go back to Vicky and Joe’s, a group staying here at the orphanage, and another team head to a local school to do some yard work to prepare for students to return next month. The schools have been closed since early 2020. Education online for the majority of students in Mexico (zoom) is nearly impossible. Children have had a hard time getting the education they needed this last year and hopefully the schools will be able to open again next month.
Photos will be posted in a little while…
